From 26 March 2021, the vorarlberg museum in Bregenz will present in its Atrium an exhibition entitled "2000 m Above Sea Level. Vorarlberg, Silvretta and Art".
In five chapters focusing on different topics, the way artists have dealt with the mountain as a topos will be addressed, with the main emphasis being on 20th and 21st century art. "We will be concentrating on places of yearning, peaks climbed, but also on how the tourism industry interferes with nature. Mountain views of well-known alpinists are on show as well as classic Land Art projects, humorous reproductions of famous peaks as 'mountains to go', or photographic panoramas of our tamed alpine landscape." Three Matterhorn sculptures created by Ottmar Hörl are presented in the "Replica of an Idol" section. Originally, Ottmar Hörl had ninety-six copies of this piece produced for the "Berge versetzen" [Moving Mountains] exhibition running at the Kunsthalle Ziegelhütte in Appenzell in 2012/2013, where they were offered for purchase and visitors had a chance take them home with them. Hörl's deliberate reference to the well-known saying is not just a play upon words, but also an allusion to the utopian potential or desire to change the world with creative means that has been evident in modern art since its beginnings."
